The Pull: A Look at the Comics Dropping the Week of November 22nd
It’s a big week of releases, both on the buying and tradewaiting side. We have a new title and a fave getting its second volume leading the way in this week’s edition in The Pull, so let’s get to it.
Comic of the Week: Somna #1
This is a sell for one reason: It’s Becky Cloonan and Tula Lotay. Really, this is more of a Cloonan sell, as I’m a massive fan of her work, particularly when it rides the line between horror, supernatural, and sexy as she does oh so well. This feels in the vein of her short comics like Demeter. That makes this an easy buy. It’s enhanced dramatically by Lotay, though, and the idea of this duo co-writing and co-drawing this three issue miniseries is an alluring one. That partnership makes Somna a concoction I can’t sleep on, and one I’m excited to dive into, especially after getting a taste of it from their story in The Devil’s Cut.
Trade/Graphic Novel of the Week: Kaya Volume 2
Spoiler alert: Wes Craig’s Kaya will be featured in my end of the year coverage, and this second volume is an obviously essential part of why that is. Kaya has impressed for a whole lot of reasons, but the fact that it represents the totality of Craig’s influences and skills into one impressively crafted book is the main one. You won’t find many comics that are more well told, visually speaking, than Kaya, and this volume is a doozy in that regard. Wes Craig! Good at comics! News at 11!
