It’s a heavy week of releases with a whole lot of fun comics to choose from. But really, there’s no choice at all. Let’s look at the clear cut Comic of the Week and more in this edition of The Pull.

Comic of the Week: Zatanna: Bring Down the House #1

This DC Black Label miniseries is on the shortlist of my most anticipated single issue titles of the year. It may even be number one. A huge part of that is artist Javier Rodriguez, someone who is maybe my favorite artist working today — especially when he pencils, inks, and colors himself, as he’s doing here. This is certain to be one of the best looking and most exciting comics of the year, if only because of how much a sensation Rodriguez is. It’s sure to look unlike anything else on the stands in the bvery est of ways. But that’s not all! Pair Rodriguez with writer Mariko Tamaki, someone who is one of the strongest talents in the game today, and offering both of them the opportunity to operate within their own space thanks to Black Label and this book’s ceiling gets even higher, especially with letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou onboard. With that much talent, Zatanna: Bring Down the House’s baseline expectation is set at greatness. I believe it can achieve more than that, and I’m terribly excited to see if I’m right.

Trade/Graphic Novel of the Week: Kaya Vol. 3

I have talked up Kaya a lot since it started so I will keep this short. Wes Craig’s ongoing fantasy series is one of the best single issue comic series going today, full stop. No caveats. No qualifiers. Nothing. It’s just one of the best, and it’s worth a read for Craig’s cartooning and storytelling alone. That you get an extremely entertaining story about adventure and family and destiny makes it even better. If you like comics of any variety, you should be reading Kaya. It’s that simple.
