Double Take: Taking a Tour of Lands Unknown, as the Second Phase of Mike Mignola’s New Universe Arrives
Welcome to Double Take, a column dedicated to highlighting different comics and each’s merits through a discussion between two veterans of the comic site space. One is yours truly, the person behind the Eisner Award-losing SKTCHD, David Harper. The other is friend of the site and the Eisner Award-winning comics critic Oliver Sava. This time, we’re turning our attention to a new effort by a master.
In the latest edition of Double Take, we’re heading off to explore Lands Unknown, as Mike Mignola’s new universe over at Dark Horse Comics is hitting its next phase and we are ready.
After last year’s Bowling with Corpses & Other Strange Tales From Lands Unknown bowled readers over 3 with Mignola’s staggering imagination and appealing tales as well as stalwart colorist Dave Stewart’s colors, this new world is expanding in a major way in March. Up first was Lands Unknown: The Skinless Man #1, writer/artist Ben Stenbeck’s multi-layered revenge story set in this world, and coming next week is Mignola’s next entry in Uri Tupka and the Gods: Another Story from Lands Unknown, a graphic novel that finds the titular Tupka on the run as he comes across all the good, bad, and wondrous of these wild lands. They’re two different flavors built from the same stock, but do they turn into good stories in the end?
Well, that’s for Oliver and David to tell, and we’ll be doing that today in the latest edition of Double Take. As a note, we do not really get into spoiler territory, and if we do, it’s pretty vague. I wouldn’t be too worried about those if that’s a concern for you.
