A SKTCHD Guide to Pronouncing Creator Names, Vol. 2
As someone who is an eternal fan of Marvel’s creator pronunciation guides from the old Bullpen Bulletins columns they’d run in their comics and someone who endlessly researches creator names before interviews, it was only a matter of time before I started up my own guide to pronouncing creator names. I finally did that in March, as the first volume to the SKTCHD Guide to Pronouncing Creator Names hit, and delightfully, folks welcomed it with open arms as they learned — once and for all — that creator name x, y, or z was actually pronounced this way, not that way.
But as the name suggested, more of these were always destined to come, and that day has arrived, as the second volume of the SKTCHD Guide to Pronouncing Creator Names is here. It’s another plus-sized edition, as I did so much research for future volumes that I thought, “Well, maybe I should just work some of those into this edition.” So I did just that, along with the occasional linked-to read of creator names 1 or location where you can find the person (or someone connected to them) guiding people through the proper way to say it — just in case you wanted proof that these phonetic guides are on point.
Let’s get to the pronunciation guide, which remains open to non-subscribers. But trust me when I say that a lot of work went into making sure this was right. Want to support that type of (Eisner Award-nominated) effort? Subscribe to SKTCHD today. Also, if you’re a creator who would like their name and the proper way to pronounce added to future editions, email me me at david@SKTCHD.com and I’ll make sure to work it in.

Including one by a guest star.↩
The writer says “Generally I go by something like Dennis.↩
Which is “good enough” per the artist but maybe not precisely accurate.↩
Although the cartoonist admitted, “It’s pronounced slightly differently in French.”↩
Although as one reader quickly suggested, it’s properly pronounced, “Joe MAD!”↩
Lee-ah-nuh works as well, per the artist.↩
This one was confirmed with the artist to be sure.↩
A good tip that Raina herself shares on her Teaching Books page is Telgemeier rhymes with “Helga” and “Meyer” when combined.↩
As the writer told me, “The easiest way to say my name is Thor-unn — or, for the comics people, just think ‘Jason Aaron’s Thor run’ and remove ‘Jason Aaron’ — (but) my more adventurous American friends will at some point skip the H in Thor, ending up with To-runn, which is probably closer to what we say.”↩
The artist said suggested “best” was a good word to exemplify the “e” sound in both his first and last names.↩
