The Pull: A Look at the Comics Dropping the Week of June 17th

It’s pandemonium on the trade/graphic novel front this week, but we’re back to the old rule of there can only be one. So, let’s see where things take us in this edition of The Pull, as I highlight my buys, recommendations, and curiosities from the week of comics.

Comic of the Week: End of Life #5

This is far and away my favorite of the new Vertigo titles, and it’s a perfect showcase for the skills of all its creators. It’s the unique blend of action-packed, hilarious, and poignant that Kyle Starks excels at. It’s loaded with outrageously potent cartooning by Pugh, someone who brings characters to life in a rare way. And Chris O’Halloran complements Pugh perfectly, amplifying all of his strengths and bringing the most out in the art. If you’re looking for a great book with a bad attitude, one filled with style and substance, I could not recommend End of Life any more highly.

Trade/Graphic Novel of the Week: Gigs TP

Even in a week filled with exceptional fits for this spot, there was never any doubt that Gigs — Mark Mosedale and Si Smith’s Top Shelf graphic novel — would earn the win here. I’m very, very excited for this book, as Smith’s art is a revelation, Mosedale seems like a fierce talent, and its concept that explores a future where the work of humans has been taken over by AI could not feel more fitting for this moment. It tours different characters and their experiences in this gig-based economy (given to them by an app that doles out jobs as it sees fit), and it sounds like a lovely, prescient, and quite possibly frightening read. I cannot wait.
