The Pull: A Look at the Comics Dropping the Week of October 7th

It’s a monster week in the comic world, and I’m not just saying that because the literally monster laden Midnight books are hitting. There’s a lot to cover, though, so let’s get straight to my buys, recommendations, and curiosities from the week of comics in another edition of The Pull.

Comic of the Week: Midnight X-Men #1

There’s a review of all three Midnight titles hitting this week in the latest edition of Double Take, so full thoughts to come, but let’s just say that I was excited by the prospect of Jonathan Hickman’s return to the X-Men and I did not come out of my read disappointed. If you’re worried that Midnight X-Men is going to feel like a rehash of the many, many other times the X-Men and vampires have come in contact with one another, all I have to say — in the parlance of Marvel’s Merry Mutants — is X-pect the unXpected. This is a good one.

Trade/Graphic Novel of the Week: Beetle Moses: A Comics Menagerie

I’m not sure if you’ve noticed but I’m a bit of a fan of Beetle Moses, the web comic strip about…I don’t even know how to describe it. I’ve previously said it perfectly marries the comic strip form with meme culture, and I’m not even sure that’s accurate anymore. But if you’re looking for a comic to make you laugh and maybe even think and feel a fair bit, I could not recommend its first print collection — Beetle Moses: A Comics Menagerie — any more highly. It’s tremendous, and now in print for those folks who want that Beetle action but maybe a bit less screen time.
