The Pull: A Look at the Comics Dropping the Week of September 17th

It’s a big week in comics, with a whole lot of great comics to highlight in The Pull. And yet, this look at my buys, recommendations, and curiosities from the week of comics is led by…a free magazine about comics and a graphic novel from a new imprint on the scene? And we have the return of a long lost category? Whoa! There are surprises around every corner here, so let’s get to it.

Comic of the Week: Zdarsky Comic News #15

This is a funny pick, as it’s neither a comic nor something you have to buy. But in a week filled with a lot of comics I’ve featured recently, I thought it’d be a good time to remind folks that Zdarsky Comic News? Still a hoot! And this week’s issue promises to be a doozy, as it’s Chip talking with Matt Fraction about taking on Batman after the former departed the book. It looks like it should be a fun issue, and if you’re new to the ZCN world, this is a good place to jump on board. Plus: It’s free! What a great price!

Trade/Graphic Novel of the Week: Lucas Wars HC

I’ve written about Lucas Wars already, but this 23rd Street Books release is — spoilers! — going to be on my end of the year lists, both for creators and comics. This graphic novel about the life of George Lucas and the making of Star Wars is truly great, and a huge part of that is its artist, Renaud Roche, someone who is new to me but is not soon to be forgotten. The guy is a sensation, an Alex Toth school talent that delivers sensational work with minimal lines and maximum emotion. This is a great book, especially for the Star Wars fans out there.
