There’s a whole lot of good and neat stuff from this week. Almost too much. I was at a conference for work this week and I almost felt like every time I looked there were 20 new and interesting news items. Calm down, comics! Don’t you know I’m busy enough already?! Let’s look at the deluge of news from this week in Comics Assembled, my column that looks at ten things I liked or didn’t like from the week, led by, unfortunately, one of the few bummer things from the week. Alas.

The Chelsea Cain thing is so bizarre, and while putting the tweets into the book is definitely a bad move, I kind of get why she was so frustrated and defensive otherwise. Part of me wants to discuss the more underlying issues that got this ball rolling, but since I am a forty-something white guy I feel like it is probably not my place. For what it’s worth, I do enjoy Man-Eaters, but it is definitely not for everyone.

I also get why she’d feel defensive. I mean, any time it feels like you’re being attacked by others you’re going to get at least a little defensive. That said, the way she handled it was just about the worst way you can, especially because it was very obviously her in the wrong. To me, that’s one of the worst parts. She didn’t even try to diffuse it. She just escalated and bailed, basically.

Also: why didn’t she just make some mean tweets up? She’s a writer! That’d be easy to do. That’s one part that gets me. She chose to get revenge and it’s such a small, petty thing to do on a person who had something like 150 followers at the time.

There’s the larger societal issue of piling on and how people just love to get on a hot button issue that doesn’t actually involve them, and that’s also not great. But this is such a sprawling, complicated topic outside of the core of Cain’s handling of it that if I wrote about all of it, I’d STILL be writing about it. Cain’s broader comic experience over the past couple years is an interesting example of how much things can change for the creator online, and one that’s almost worth studying to understand where things went wrong.

As for Man-Eaters: I haven’t read it, but like you said about it not being for everyone, even qualitatively it sounds polarizing.

The DC millennium thing is so far up my alley I need a car to get down there. I’m so psyched. Legion also seems like it’ll be a thing I will freak out about.

As someone who’s DC experience is very limited, I’m excited to read the Batman/Catwoman book simply for the fact there is a villain I know from my childhood in it. I saw Mask of the Phantasm when I was maybe 6 or 7 years old.

…though I’m reading on DC Universe, so I’ll be reading the first issue in 19 months at the earliest.

I’m not a huge Legion guy, but Ryan Sook drawing damn near anything is enough for me to get maximum hype train.

You know, I often wonder how many people just read via Marvel Unlimited and/or DC Universe now. It wouldn’t really bother me, as I don’t particularly care about being timely in my reads, but still, it’s awfully interesting to me. I’ll be curious if you end up finding that disorienting.
