Comics Disassembled: Ten Things of Note from the Past Week in Comics, Led by Random House Getting Graphic

It’s San Diego Comic Con week, and the big panels haven’t even started yet. That means this week’s edition of Comics Disassembled, in which I look at ten things I liked or didn’t like from the week of comics, won’t cover any antics from Hall H, none of the Jonathan Hickman X-Men announcements, and anything else that might come up at SDCC. I suppose I could write about the Top Gun: Maverick trailer, or maybe the Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, or maybe even the living nightmare that is Cats.

But I’m not going to! Let’s get to the good stuff, of which there is many because this is SDCC week, baby!

Have you elaborated anywhere why, if there hypothetically had been a sequel to Kingsman, say, in 2017, it would have been so awful as to cause you to act as if it simply never happened?

Also, I can’t remember the last time I got whiplash as badly as I did reading “New BOP with Lupacchino” – super hyped! gonna read this! – “written by Brian Azzarello” – oh, ok, nevermind. Ever since the whole Killing Joke fiasco, where he managed to somehow make the movie even worse than the book, then called a detractor a p***y at a panel, then doubled down on it on social media, I’ve refused to read anything of his. I agree that it’d be better if this had a woman writing it – there are several who are outspoken about wanting to do so, even – but there are also many men I’d rather see writing it than him.

It’s not bad as much as it is just utterly forgettable. I like some parts, most of which involve Mark Strong, who is just utterly phenomenal as Merlin. It just loses a whole lot of the spice of the first film, and ultimately feels like it succumbs to the problems of most sequels in that it mistakes “more” for “better.” The first one is just a shockingly tight and entertaining movie throughout. The King’s Man feels more in that vein.

Yeah, it certainly doesn’t have to be a woman, but Azzarello feels like a weird, weird fit, and that’s without even knowing that a) he wrote that adaptation and b) that he did that. I have my own personal story with him, which I’ve generally chosen to keep to myself, but when it comes to a fit question, it’s a weird one. I’m sure he’ll be able to write it well. But it goes back to what I said on Off Panel this week to Oliver: I feel like DC’s editors aren’t as good as Marvel’s editors at diagnosing what the right fits are for their creators.

Ugh, I didn’t know that about Azzarello. Gross. That’s too bad because I really like the Birds of Prey concept, but I don’t think I want to support a book written by a guy like that.

This really seems like a spot-on point. Leah Williams writing the upcoming Gwenpool mini and now the announcement today that she is also writing a Mary Jane book just seems like really great choices by Marvel. It’s really unfortunate that no one at DC was thinking along those lines for the new Birds of Prey book.

A bunch of stuff is way up my interest alley this week, but my favorite is the article about Blastoff Comics. I’ve been there a few times and it’s probably my favorite store in LA. It’s a great shop, totally set up as an ideal shop for single issues or trades. Great staff and a clearly curated selection.
Crazy thing is, it closed down last week!
