The Pull: A Look at the Comics Dropping the Week of April 22nd

It’s a fun week of comics, as an old favorite returns to lead the way in this look at my buys, recommendations, and curiosities in another edition of The Pull.

Comic of the Week: Head Lopper #1

As much as the numbering on this issue bewildered me — the original cover, which you can see above, said issue #17 while other versions online say issue #1 — the key point is Head Lopper is back. It’s a very good time, and it’ll be fun to dive back in after nearly five years (!!) away. I’m sure it’ll come back to me quick, as the adventures of Norgal and Agatha the Blue Witch are always so simple yet delightful.

Trade/Graphic Novel of the Week: Young Shadow & The Watchdogs

There’s just something about Ben Sears’ work. His art and his choices and the vibe of his storytelling just hits the right electrical impulses in my brain, creating a one-of-a-kind reading experience each and every time I read it, dating all the way back to The Gleaming Corridor, which I believe was the first time I came across his work (my adoration of Sears dates back to SKTCHD 1.0 even). It’s so precise and specific and spectacular that it truly couldn’t come from someone else, which is how you know it’s good. But if you’re unfamiliar with Sears’ work, there’s no better time to start than now, as this Fantagraphics release finds the cartoonist telling a tale that features everything from baseball to monsters in a middle-grade comic that’s truly for readers of all ages. Start here, then go everywhere, because everything Sears does is tremendous.
