The Pull: A Look at the Comics Dropping the Week of April 7th

Appealing debuts, exciting returns, and a new fave, all in one week? Be still my beating heart! Let’s look at a big week in The Pull, as I shared my buys, recommendations, and curiosities from the week of comics, led by the arrival of an intriguing approach by some excellent creators.

Book of the Week: The Silver Coin #1

I love the idea of this project, which is an important feather in its cap. It’s a horror anthology series in which the two constants are the titular Silver Coin – its a shared universe connected by that item – and its artist, as this is a Michael Walsh-fueled joint. The writer changes each issue, with people like Kelly Thompson, Ed Brisson and Jeff Lemire stepping in on future issues. It all begins with Walsh and Chip Zdarsky, as this pair launches the series with a story about a band whose fortune changes when they acquire the coin…before things maybe go awry!

That’s a great idea, and the creators onboard are the other clear draw. With art at a constant high, the DC Challenge like nature of the idea where writers can constantly iterate on one another, and the premise connecting everything, there’s a lot to like here. I’m excited for it both for its innovative idea and for the talent connected to it. We’ll see if it lives up to my self-hype today. I fully expect it to.
