We’re deep into the holiday vortex and the Christmas slowness is starting to hit. Still, a solid week in comics is here, so let’s look at my buys, recommendations, and curiosities from the week of comics, led by a new favorite dropping its latest.
Book of the Week: Newburn #2
I just read the first issue of this. And by “just,” I mean just a couple days ago, as I’ve been rather distracted by every comic that came out in 2021 as I prepare for my end of the year features. Reading it made me annoyed with myself that I didn’t get there sooner, as Newburn is a very, very good comic. A serious book with an absolutely incendiary lead in Easton Newburn, this feels like a fusion of Gotham Central and the Parker books, but with Pulp Fiction’s The Wolf as the lead. That mishmash of genre standouts might taste like nothing in your mouth, but in actual application it leads to an excellent debut.
Chip Zdarsky and Jacob Phillips are doing things here. Good things. NEWBURN THINGS. I’m very in.
