The Pull: A Look at the Comics Dropping the Week of February 21st

It’s a dense week, one with a lot of competition for the Comic of the Week spot. But once I realized what was coming out, I knew what I wanted to talk about, even if it isn’t what you might expect. Let’s get into that and the rest of my picks from the week of releases in the latest edition of The Pull.

Comic of the Week: Animal Pound #2

I’m not going to lie: I was worried about this book. I thought Tom King and Peter Gross were going to upset me to the max with the first issue and I was going to be turned off from it immediately. But I gave it a shot, and you know what? I liked it a whole lot! I have no doubt that they’re just waiting to rip my heart out, but the first issue established that this Animal Farm riff has a lot of potential, and something that could offer a ton of weight and emotion to readers who open themselves up to it. I’m ready for more, but I know pain is coming. I will steel myself and continue onwards, because the craft here is superb.

Trade/Graphic Novel of the Week: Time Before Time Vol. 5

This was one of my Comics of 2023, so it should be no surprise to see its final volume here, but Rory McConville, Declan Shalvey, Geoffo, Joe Palmer, Chris O’Halloran, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou really deliver a strong finale with this volume. If you missed it in its entirety, this is a series that would absolutely rip in trades, and I bet you’d enjoy its timey wimey and crimey story if you like that sort of thing.
