It’s a trade waiting heavy week, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some intriguing picks at the top. So, let’s look at this week’s slate of comics by exploring my buys, recommendations, and curiosities in the latest edition of The Pull.

Comic of the Week: Runaways #1

I wrote about it before, but I just want to note once again that Stephanie Hans’ cover to this issue is just elite. One of the best in recent memory, and a single image emphasis of what makes Hans special as an artist.

That’s not why I’ll be buying this, though. It’s that this is a Rainbow Rowell written Runaways miniseries, and while it’s an event tie-in, it’s a fitting one as it’s a Doom-centric one and Runaways features a Doombot as a core cast member. Throw in art by Elena Casagrande — one of the more underrated artists in the superhero comic game — and this miniseries has considerably more potential than your average event tie-in one. I can’t wait.

Trade/Graphic Novel of the Week: The Nice House by the Sea Vol. 1 TP

It feels like this should have been out by now already, but for those who were curious if The Nice House by the Lake’s sequel could live up to the first volume’s standard, then I have good news: The Nice House by the Sea Vol. 1 proves that it can and then some. James Tynion IV and Álvaro Martínez Bueno have created a follow up that connects more closely to its predecessor than some may have expected by name, and while it continues to be good because of the reasons the first volume was, it’s great because Bueno and colorist Jordie Bellaire’s art. This is an exceptionally good looking comic, and one that’s a tremendous mix of intriguing and entertaining.
