The Pull: A Look at the Comics Dropping the Week of March 20th

What’s a columnist to do when there’s a lot of options for the top spot? Find the best answer, as per usual. Let’s look at what ended up claiming the throne and more in this week’s edition of The Pull.

Comic of the Week: Dawnrunner #1

In a competitive week with three notable debuts, Dawnrunner #1 easily takes the top spot. I read the first issue of this Dark Horse series from Ram V, Evan Cagle, Dave Stewart, and Aditya Bidikar back in January, and it is exactly my kind of thing. The elevator pitch from Ram was something like, “What if the people who made the movie Arrival told a kaiju/mecha story?” and that is something I find irresistible, at least in theory. In actuality? It might be even better, as this first issue does a remarkable job of establishing its world and how it works while revealing that there are even greater depths to the story, with the visuals from Cagle, Stewart, and Bidikar being absolutely elite. This has the potential to be one of the best comics of 2024, and the start of something more if it hits. I’m really looking forward to it.
