In a week that lacks a typical headliner, tie goes to an underrated comic that deserves some love.

Book of the Week: The New Champion of Shazam #3

The New Champion of Shazam is what you get if you merge the sensibilities of a classic superhero story with the vibes of The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. It’s the rare title that I’d say the cranks who want comics to be more like yesteryear and those who enjoy the titles of today would like, even if the former might not give it a chance. More than that, it features strong writing from Josie Campbell, absolutely electric art from Doc Shaner, and a rabbit character that’s rapidly rising through my personal “favorite characters of 2022” power rankings. It’s just a rock solid comic, one that entertains in a breezy yet impactful way. I’m a big fan of this one.

I haven’t read it, but I’m not a huge Will Sliney fan and I’m hit or miss with Soule, so it was a pass. If I hear enough good things I’ll check it out, but it wasn’t one I was eager to read. Did you read it?

Unfortunately, I dropped it this week. It was about to be a drop because it nearly hit three issues without me reading it, but then I caught up and just…wasn’t very impressed. Great idea. Execution has been alright outside a strong first issue. It was time for me to move on. Are you still feeling it?

I haven’t read either new issue yet, but I’m of a like mind.

I can’t say I’ve read much of Soule, but 8 Billion Genies, of course, is a real banger. I didn’t know if that level of excitement would translate to this new series.

And I have to agree about Teeth. Perfectly fine, but in a world with Ducks, Freestyle, and Squire in it fine might not be enough.

Soule’s interesting because I love his work with Ryan Browne and his Darth Vader run, but besides that, it’s mostly eh. I don’t know what it is. Maybe I need to read more, but I’ve largely been down besides those two very high highs.
