The Pull: A Look at the Comics Dropping the Week of October 16th

It’s the week of New York Comic Con, and the comic industry is celebrating by taking all my money. Thanks, everyone! Let’s look at a robust week of comic releases in The Pull, as I highlight my buys, recommendations, and curiosities from the week of comics, led by Chris Samnee doing Chris Samnee things.

Comic of the Week: Batman and Robin: Year One #1

The beginning, middle, and end of this comic’s story for me is what I said in the intro. I am here for Chris Samnee drawing his first Batman series. While seeing Mat Lopes color him on an entire 12-issue story and finding writer Mark Waid reteam with Samnee is also appealing, Samnee’s on my shortlist of “I’ll buy everything they do” creators. Pair that by building anticipation up for this release over the years of Batober, and I am unbelievably ready to read this comic. In a dense week of releases, it was an obvious pick for the Samnee of it all.

Trade/Graphic Novel of the Week: The Deviant Vol. 1 TP

I read the first issue of this and have been patiently waiting for its first collection ever since. James Tynion IV comics are always worth a read, of course, but the main event here is Joshua Hixson’s art. The guy’s a fierce talent, and someone who has always deserved a high visibility showcase of that work. He gets it here, and I’m terribly excited to see what he cooked up past that harrowing first issue.

“You’re coming with me”: The for sure buys and recommendations of the week

Black Cloak #9: Kelly Thompson and Meredith McClaren continue to cook in this (deservedly) Eisner Award-nominated series.

Destro #5: While it’d probably finish last in my Energon Universe power rankings, this series has been solid, and I’m excited to see where Dan Watters and Andrei Bressan end things in this issue.

The Domain #4: I continue to be stunned by how much I like this series that is the comic the characters in Public Domain are making in that comic. It’s not that I don’t believe in the creators behind this series, either in-world or in reality. It’s just it’s such a wild concept it shouldn’t work this well. And yet, it does!

From the World of Minor Threats: Barfly #3: It’s been a minute since we had an issue of this, but it’s solid in all the ways a comic written by Kyle Starks and drawn by Ryan Browne should be.

Mystique #1: Comics that embrace the phrase “Let Declan Shalvey cook” are sure to make my list. I’ll be interested to see what he has in store for us in this From the Ashes release.

Revival Compendium: Relative to its peers from the era, Tim Seeley and Mike Norton’s Image series never felt like it earned the acclaim or interest it deserved. Which is a shame, because it’s a great series that does something new with the idea of the undead. But with a show on the horizon and this compendium collecting it in its entirety, here’s hoping it gains its audience here.

Ultimate Spider-Man #10: This series continues to be a great one, and it appears that this issue will cross multiple parts of Peter Parker’s life over in a real and hopefully entertaining way. I’m excited for Ultimate JJJ getting mad about things at the very least. It’s not a Marco issue, though, but that’s fine.

Where Monsters Lie: Cull-De-Sac #1: Where Monsters Lie was one of the quieter releases of Kyle Starks’ recent surge, but it’s not because it isn’t a good one. This sequel continues the story of the gated community for slasher villains, and I have no doubt it will continue to deliver the quality we saw from its first volume.

Would buy, but I’m a dirty, rotten trade waiter
