The Pull: A Look at the Comics Dropping the Week of September 24th

It’s another loaded week with some notable releases — particularly ones with outrageous art. So, let’s get into this week’s slate in another edition of The Pull, as I highlight my buys, recommendations, and curiosities from the comics that are available this Wednesday.

Comic of the Week: Orphan and the Five Beasts: Bath of Blood #1

I loved the first volume of Orphan and the Five Beasts. It was a great story of revenge and violence and absurdity, and in that very specific James Stokoe voice that few can match. It was a heck of a read, even if it was an incomplete one, as this new volume in Bath of Blood continues its lead Orphan’s quest to take out the titular five beasts (who are really tough former disciples of her now deceased master). It’s a blast. But let’s be real: The reason we’re here is for Stokoe’s art. Look at that cover. The guy is ridiculous, and in all the best ways. You will not find a comic that looks better this week — which is really saying something given the competition here! — or almost any other week. Stokoe is on a tier of his own. The guy’s ridiculous. I cannot wait to feast my eyes on this bonkers book.

Trade/Graphic Novel of the Week: Metamorpho: The Element Man Vol. 1

I decided to wait for trade on this, and the entirety of the hook here for me is its elite, elite, elite creative team. Al Ewing and Steve Lieber are great individually, but they’re also two flavors that just feel like they should fit well together. They have some great complementary skills and some unique aspects to their work that could lead to them lifting each other up in unexpected ways. Pair that with the visual bonanza that is Metamorpho’s power set, and this title is one that has significant potential. I’m excited to finally give it a read to see if my head canon for this collaboration is correct.
