Double Take: Does the Gang Get Shot Through the Heart by Love Bullet Vol. 1?

Welcome to Double Take, a column dedicated to highlighting different comics and each’s merits through a discussion between two veterans of the comic site space. One is yours truly, the person behind the Eisner Award-losing SKTCHD, David Harper. The other is friend of the site and the Eisner Award-winning comics critic Oliver Sava. And today, we’re looking at a big manga debut.

It’s always important to diversify your reads, and coming off a couple superhero — or superhero-adjacent — editions of Double Take, we’re looking internationally for our latest subject. That’s right: We’re talking manga once again!

This one has a very organic path to making it to this column, as David had a conversation with a couple charming booksellers at Barnes & Noble about manga, one that resulted in a hearty recommendation of something he’d never heard of. It’s inee’s Love Bullet Vol. 1, a Yen Press release that was just published in December 2025, one that finds this yuri series and its creator making their debut. What’s it about? Here’s the synopsis straight from Yen’s site:

“One fateful day, Koharu is saved from an untimely end and reborn as a Cupid. Her mission: bring love to humans and earn a second chance at life. But modern problems call for modern solutions, and the Cupids of today have traded in their outdated bows and arrows for high-velocity firearms! Koharu’s happy to dutifully help others find love, but her eccentric mentors don’t play by the book and will happily turn an argument over a love triangle into a battlefield of tactical matchmaking action!!”

That sounds like a lot of fun, right? You can see why the pitch worked, especially given that even a quick flip through the book underlined that inee’s art intrigued. But did it Love Bullet Vol. 1 send love surging into our hearts? Or did this debut struggle to meet its target?

There’s only one way to find out.
