The Pull: A Look at the Comics Dropping the Week of August 20th
This week, my wallet and poor typing fingers are crying out, “No more!” as a response to just how dense the lineup of great comics is. It’s a robust slate, filled with huge newcomers and previously existing favorites alike. So, let’s get to it, as I share my buys, recommendations, and curiosities from the week of comics, with that all led with a feeling I have about a new series.

Comic of the Week: Escape #1
Sometimes, you just have a feeling about a book, and I have that with Escape, the new Image series from Rick Remender and Daniel Acuña. It checks a lot of boxes for me as a reader. I adore a good story starring anthropomorphic characters. I love tales of war. I am all about Acuña’s art, especially when he gets a chance to go all out like this. This feels like a comic that will be filled with big action and big emotions, and that’s a blend I’ve long felt irresistible. Pair that with Acuña’s art, and folks, we could have a banger here. I’m excited to find out, even though I may ultimately wait for trade on this one.

Trade/Graphic Novel of the Week: Drome HC
I have long preached the gospel of Jesse Lonergan on the site and podcast, and for good reason: He’s a tremendous talent and a great dude. I’m a member of the Lonergang for a reason, and I suspect that squad will grow with this release, as it might be his magnum opus — at least so far. Now, I’m not saying it’s necessarily my favorite work of his, as I’m awfully fond of Hedra and Faster. It might be, though, and Drome undeniably finds Lonergan pushing his approach and gifts further than he has to date. The result is a heck of a thing, and a graphic novel that’s quite unlike any others you’ll read in 2025. Plus: It’s absolutely gorgeous, as the 23rd Street Books production work is exquisite.
