Comics Disassembled: Eight Things I Liked or Didn’t Like from the Past Week in Comics, Led by a Charming Recreation
Folks, it’s been a weird week, one that featured at least one medical appointment for each day of the week. Because of that, we’re doing a speed run — or as speed run like as I can, because I have my limitations as a person — in this week’s edition of Comics Disassembled, as I highlight ten eight things I liked or didn’t like from the week of comics led by a nice, fun thing.

Kevin Maguire, Recreated
Last week, I talked about how it’s my goal to not feature adaptation news in this column, or more specifically, it’s my goal to not feature it very high in the column. And yet, for the second week in a row, I’m breaking that guideline, but it is at least for a comic book reason. It seems that a bevy of notable DC creators — including Jim Lee, Frank Quitely, Dan Jurgens, Scott Snyder, Jason Aaron, Joshua Williamson, and an array of others — visited the set of Superman last summer at the behest of writer/director James Gunn. Which is a neat thing, and something everyone seemed to enjoy greatly. That in of itself isn’t top item worthy, though.
What I was happy to put up here, though, is the fact that while they were there, the entire crew recreated Kevin Maguire and Terry Austin’s iconic cover to 1987’s Justice League #1 for a photo. You know the one, both because you can see it above and because it’s something that’s extremely easy to visualize for your average superhero comic fan for good reason. That alone is incredibly fun, but there are two things I especially love about it. One is that Maguire himself was in attendance, so he was able to recreate his own work with his fellow creators and the director and two main stars of the movie in David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult, both of whom really got into it, it seems. The other is I am 100% convinced this was Gunn’s idea, as he’s on record as being a Justice League International fan and just seems to have a real, “I’ve been waiting for this moment for my entire life” type energy in that photo.
It’s great. And in a week with a whole lot of ill tidings, sometimes it’s nice to start things in a good place.
DC, Getting Adapted
In for a penny, in for a pound, as they say, so let’s keep the DC adaptation related news going with the second item this week. Two big news items dropped on that front, and we’re going to focus on the more comics centric bit that arrived because that’s the much cooler and more developed idea. The first was that Gunn shared in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that there is a new Wonder Woman movie in development, and it’s in the process of being written. Maybe even right now as we speak. Which is neat, but not a lot to go on beyond it being a thing that is happening.
The other more interesting and more defined and more comic related item is that Tom King and Mitch Gerads’ Mister Miracle series — you know, the one that won a whole bunch of awards and hearts in equal measures — is being adapted into an adult animated series by Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios. But who could they possibly get to bring such an idea to life? They’d need someone who really gets the characters and has familiarity with the story. Even better, they’d need two someones, like…real Tom King and Mitch Gerads types. So, DC Studios made the wise move of just hiring King to showrun and executive produce the series while Gerads is “very involved” in some way, including drawing the announcement image for the show’s reveal at the Annecy Festival.
That’s wonderful! The James Gunn, Peter Safran era of DC Studios seems to be making all the right moves right now, and at a time where DC’s comic side is too. This is a great bit of news, and a tremendous bit of recognition for King and Gerads that extends beyond all the applause and sales the Mister Miracle comic inspired to begin with. So, congrats to that duo. It’s great to see!
