The Pull: A Look at the Comics Dropping the Week of December 31st

Unsurprisingly, new comic book day falling on New Year’s Eve is a recipe for a rather small slate. But there are some good and notable books in there still, so let’s take a look at the buys, recommendations, and curiosities from the week of comics, with it all led by the beginning of the end for Marvel’s biggest gun right now.

Comic of the Week: Ultimate Endgame #1

Event comics are polarizing as all get out, but I’m a big fan of the form personally. While they’re high variance, you can’t have high variance without some major wins in there alongside the eh examples of the form. And if you’re asking me for what — or who — is likely to lead to a great event, I’d go with a top creative team telling a tale that concludes a story that’s been building for the past two years. That’s what we’re getting with Ultimate Endgame, as my Writer of the Year in Deniz Camp is teaming with artists Jonas Scharf and Terry Dodson to pay off all the narrative promises Ultimate Marvel has been making since it first launched. Is it possible it won’t deliver? Sure. But I’ll bet on a creative team like that, and as Dodson recently pointed out on Off Panel, at the very least it will be interesting to see what a Marvel comic that actually ends looks like, as this one is meant to do. Consider me cautiously optimistic about Ultimate Endgame!
