The Pull: A Look at the Comics Dropping the Week of February 14th

Love is in the air, and you know what else is? Comics! Let’s look at another week of comic releases and the ones that may or may not be coming home with me in the latest edition of The Pull.

Comic of the Week: Masterpiece #3

Very quietly, writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Alex Maleev have been doing some very Bendis and Maleev things here. Masterpiece is an absolute blast, a peak of their powers type release that’s getting slept on a little too much in my opinion. It’s tremendously decompressed, but in that way Bendis does when he’s really rolling that draws you into the cast. Given that it’s about the daughter of master thieves tasked with making up for her parents going a little too far with an enormously wealthy man and the colorful figures from her her parents’ past, you know it’s loaded with characters that will really pop with this team, and it finds Maleev really delivering some special storytelling. I dig this one a whole lot.

Trade/Graphic Novel of the Week: Fall Through GN

I just chatted with cartoonist Nate Powell on Off Panel, so you know I’m fond of this one, but it’s a solid and mysterious read that explores the power of youth, community, and music, and does so in a way that draws you in both through Powell’s masterful art and his unique perspective of what the musical communities he explores in this story are really like. It’s the type of story Powell was born to tell, which is really saying something.
