The Pull: A Look at the Comics Dropping the Week of January 31st
And the year begins with a fifth week month, meaning it’s a bit of an oddball week. But that’s okay! There are gems in there as well. Let’s get to my buys, recommendations, and curiosities from the week of comics in another edition of The Pull.
Comic of the Week: Duke #2
I expected to like the first issue of this series. Not because the G.I. Joe of it all, but because of the creative team, as Joshua Williamson is typically solid and Tom Reilly and Jordie Bellaire are stars. I in fact loved it, as Williamson delivered a rock solid concept with constant surprises, Reilly impressed in unexpected ways, and Bellaire tied it all together with her colors, as she does. This immediately became a top of the stack book, so, yeah, it’s my easy comic of the week.
Trade/Graphic Novel of the Week: Miss Truesdale and the Fall of Hyperborea HC
While this read is deep Mignolaverse business, it’s still an intriguing read, and one highlighted by artist Jesse Lonergan crushing it in typical Jesse Lonergan ways. While I’d be hesitant to recommend this comic to everyone — it works in isolation, but it’s so steeped in ideas and lore from the larger Hellboy story that you’ll miss quite a bit without some level of awareness — if you’re someone who appreciates tremendous comic book craft, this one is for you.
