And we’re back! With…a super weird week! Let’s get to my buys, recommendations, and curiosities from the week of comics, which is a rather short list given the debut of a brand new event at one of the Big Two.

Comic of the Week: Great British Bump-Off #4

John Allison and Max Sarin are the Brubaker and Phillips of slice of life/comedy crime fiction, and we as a society need to put respect on their name. They’re also the Brubaker and Phillips of college age coming of age comedies. I suspect they’d be the Brubaker and Phillips of whatever type of comic they really wanted to make, besides maybe actual Brubaker and Phillips comics. It’s possible I’m taking this too far. Whatever. The point is, though: always read John and Max.

Yes, it’s true. Allison and Sarin are the Brubaker and Phillips of <insert genre here> comics.

So, I don’t know if you know this, but Fishflies won’t be collected in trade paperback. Because the issues are so long and they’re perfect bound, Lemire has said the issues are the paperback release. I’ll be buying digitally for now though… I want to get a big hardcover with lots of extras!

The Lonesome Hunters: The Wolf Child #1 is a series I love, so I’m buying digitally, but I’ll pick up it up again in paperback. (And, let’s face it, if it gets a hardcover library edition, I’ll buy it again.)

It isn’t out yet, but David, you absolutely need to check out “Miss Truesdale and the Fall of Hyperborea” #3 next week. I think I’m basically a Jesse Lonergan fan for life at this point. Just wow.

Also, I dunno if “dirty rotten” is the right way to describe trade waiting anymore. Thanks to pre-orders, I was able to buy all of the comics I mentioned above (well, except Fishflies) before the first issue even came out. I can support the comics I love earlier than ever in that format now.

Who is the target audience for Knight Terrors?
(who is the target audience for any of DC’s output right now?)

My LCS has no subs on Knight Terrors and ordered no more than 2 rack copies of ‘A’ characters, and 0 copies of most others. There appears to be 0 buzz.

Are you hearing the same from all the shops you talk to?

I haven’t asked specifically about subs, but it certainly has not seemed like there’s a lot of interest out there. It’s a weird one.

I’m ride or die with Lonergan but I’m tradewait all with the Mignolaverse these days.

And that may be true, Mark, but “dirty rotten” is part of the platform, so it’s staying the same until I myself change! It was always tongue in cheek anyways. I feel zero guilt trade waiting. It’s part of the process!

I’m ride or die with Lonergan but I’m tradewait all with the Mignolaverse these days.

Technically, I do too. But, y’know, I get preview PDFs for Mignolaversity. That said, I’m pulling away from that. I just don’t enjoy reading that way, so I’m moving towards only reviewing the final issue of an arc so I can read the whole thing in one go. I’ve been reading issue by issue for the last ten years now, and that’s a long time to read in a way that doesn’t work for me.
