The Pull: A Look at the Comics Dropping the Week of May 20th
An old favorite returns and a new title with significant potential debuts in this week’s edition of The Pull, as I highlight my buys, recommendations, and curiosities from yet another slate of comics you’ll find in comic shops this Wednesday.

Comic of the Week: Absolute Green Arrow #1
I don’t know if you noticed, but I’m excited about this comic, as it feels like Pornsak Pichetshote, Rafael Albuquerque, and friends are building something special in this new series from DC’s Absolute line. At least conceptually, it feels born from this moment, and it takes all the anger and energy from this time and pours it into a new version of a familiar character doing something rather unfamiliar. That’s exactly what the Absolute line should be. The only downside for me as a reader is it’s a miniseries, but in this case, I’m going to chalk that decision up to that length being right for the story — it is a mystery, after all — rather than the more cynical reasons everything is a mini these days.

Trade/Graphic Novel of the Week: Hirayasumi Vol. 9
To an even more extreme degree, I don’t really need to explain why the latest volume of Keigo Shinzo’s manga series Hirayasumi is my pick for the Trade/Graphic Novel of the Week. It was my favorite comic of 2024 and second favorite of 2025, and the most recent release found the series recovering from its first blip in quality, immediately returning to the towering, now Eisner Award-nominated heights it typically lives in. This volume builds off a rare cliffhanger for Hirayasumi, which means I am somehow even more invested than usual. Needless to say, I’m onboard with this one, and you should be too, especially because the Hirayasumi train is about to get real full when its anime debuts in January 2027.
