Comic of the Week: Rare Flavours #1

Rare Flavours is Ram V and Filipe Andrade’s follow-up to The Many Deaths of Laila Starr.

That’s all it takes to make this a lock for this spot. The Many Deaths of Laila Starr is an incredible comic, one that perfectly highlighted the gifts of the creators working on the book, and this will at a minimum be an incredibly interesting read and at a maximum the best comic any of us read this year. That’s a pretty good range! Pair all that with the fact that this is a comic about a demon who wants to become “the next Anthony Bourdain” — a food comic! — and my friends, I cannot resist this in the slightest.

Trade/Graphic Novel of the Week: Old Dog Redact One TP

I’ve talked to writer/artist Declan Shalvey a whole lot of late, and for good reason: he is very good at what he does, and Old Dog is a fascinating and fantastically crafted spy-fi series. It looks good, it intrigues, and it has an excellent structure in its series of done-in-one issues that connect to something more. I have no idea where this book is going overall, but I am into it enough to keep following wherever Shalvey is going with it.
