The Pull: A Look at the Comics Dropping the Week of September 2nd
Another A-list BOOM! debut leads the way, as The Pull looks at my buys, recommendations, and curiosities from the week of comics. Let’s get to it, because it’s a big week!
Book of the Week: We Only Find Them When They’re Dead #1
This comic is an absolute treasure.
I talked about it on my recent podcast with writer Al Ewing, but in case I didn’t adequately sell it, this Ewing and Simone Di Meo joint is undeniably one of the great debuts of 2020, with a story that’s simultaneously so large and so small that it just slays. That’s a tough line to walk, but when you’re dealing with interpersonal intrigue and the harvesting of actual, honest to god Gods in space, then that’s what you get, especially with Ewing writing.
As with Seven Secrets before it, the revelation here is the artist, as Di Meo is basically immediately one of the best artists in comics to me. I know he’s done other work for BOOM! in the Power Rangers incubation system, but my god, his work is unreal in this issue, with the sheer imagination and potent execution being the highest class you can get in comics.
One other thing about the book: it looks great across the board. From art and lettering to design, We Only Find Them When They’re Dead is a visual bonanza. It’s the total package, for real.
