This week in comics is absolutely insane, and honestly kind of bewildering because it is so, so, so heavy in appealing comics. Spread these books out, publishers! I cannot even understand why it’s such a target rich environment when other weeks are comparatively quiet. That’s enough complaints, though, because a lot of good comics being released also means having a lot of good comics to read, so let’s look at my buys, recommendations, and curiosities from a robust week of comics in another edition of The Pull.

Comic of the Week: No Gods, No Masters #1

Slice of life-ish meets kaiju meets road trip-ish adventure across a broken cityscape? From an elite creative team in Julio Anta, Jacoby Salcedo, Francesco Segala, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou? All in a condensed, focused story length designed to maximize impact while keeping the narrative tight? In a week filled with heavyweights, I’m all about No Gods, No Monsters.

Trade/Graphic Novel of the Week: Kodi: A Place to Call Home TP

The first volume of this graphic novel series from Jared Cullum and Top Shelf was one of my Comics of 2020, and it wasn’t just because Cullum is a masterful artist. The first entry, titled Kodi, was a heartwarming tale about a young girl, her bear best friend, and life in Alaska before a move to parts unknown, and one that was headlined by two instantly, incredibly memorable leads. It’s little surprise I’d be intrigued by that, but the reason to read this above all is, again, Cullum’s art. His watercolors are beyond incredible, and some of the best artwork you’ll find any year in comics. I suspect he’s gotten much better since that first volume, so I cannot even imagine what Kodi: A Place to Call Home has in store for us.
