Artist Phillip Sevy Takes us Inside the Creation of Their Lady Stilt-Man Piece for STILT-ZINE (and Gets Interviewed in the Process)
As you might know, the world’s first ever STILT-ZINE is coming soon, both at New York Comic Con and on the SKTCHD Big Cartel after the convention. Within this zine are five articles, an infographic by Chip Zdarsky, and five different takes on variations of Stilt-Man in a one-of-a-kind pinup gallery, with pieces by Liana Kangas, Jesse Lonergan, Declan Shalvey, Kyle Starks, and Phillip Sevy. It’s a ton of fun. Want a copy? Join me at one of the times listed below in my NYCC schedule!

But do you know what else was a ton of fun? The fact that Sevy did their Lady Stilt-Man piece live as I interviewed them during the process of drawing it, and that we recorded the whole thing. The original plan was each piece would be a five minute Stilt-Man, but as tends to be the case, this was not that. Artists want to do their best work, and Sevy crushed it here. It just took a lot longer than five minutes!
Sevy and I were on the call for 1.5 hours, which gave us a ton of time to have an impromptu podcast interview of a sort. We talked a little bit of everything. How they do what he do. Digital versus traditional art. The original art world. Working on vertical scroll comics. Their Mount Rushmore of X-Men characters. We go all over the place, and unlike most of my interviews, I did literally zero prep for this one. In fact, one might say this was actually just a “conversation” rather than an interview. So, if you were ever curious what my interviews would be like if I improvised the whole thing, this for you, and it gives you an inside look at one of the pieces you’ll find in STILT-ZINE as well.
It’s a lot of fun, and you can watch and/or listen to that below or on the SKTCHD YouTube channel. If you enjoy it, let me know! I hope to do more of these art-centric chats in the future, and if you’re interested, I’ll do my best to make them happen.
