The Pull: A Look at the Comics Dropping the Week of February 5th

It’s been a strange stretch for this column, as for the second straight week, it’s pretty quiet in these parts. Last week made sense. It was a fifth week, and those are always odd. This week’s a regular one, and it’s still a small slate for yours truly. But those things happen, so let’s look at my buys, recommendations, and curiosities from the week of comics in the latest edition of The Pull.

Comic of the Week: Batman #157

And thus ends Chip Zdarsky’s lengthy run on Batman and Jorge Jimenez’s even lengthier one, as out with the old and in with the…even older in Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee? Okay, that saying doesn’t work well here, but I wanted to use this space to give Chip and Jorge their flowers for their efforts as they depart from DC’s flagship title after a couple years together. 30+ issues is no joke in this day and age, and they’ve told some fun stories throughout this run while operating within the larger machine of DC Comics. It’s been a solid run, so shouts to Chip and Jorge as the final issue of their time on Batman arrives this week.

Trade/Graphic Novel of the Week: Raised by Ghosts GN

I’ve actually had this graphic novel for a while now and haven’t had a chance to read it yet, but there’s a reason I do have it: I specifically asked Fantagraphics for it because it feels like this should be a great one. Cartoonist Briana Loewinsohn is a heck of a talent, and this semi-autobiographical release feels like an ideal manifestation of those gifts, one that showcases her abilities as a storyteller and as someone who plays with the mechanics of comic storytelling. This is going to be a good one.
