The Pull: A Look at the Comics Dropping the Week of July 30th

As I toured the release list, a thought hit my brain like a lightning bolt: It has to be a Fifth Week. I knew that without even knowing that, and sure enough, it absolutely is. So, let’s dig into another odd slate of releases, as I share my buys, recommendations, and curiosities from the week of comics in another edition of The Pull.

Comic of the Week: Lazarus Fallen #2

While it took a second to get my bearings, at least in terms of what was happening in this series when the previous issue came out, it’s undeniable that Lazarus returned with a bang in the first issue of its final run. It offered a useful reminder that when Lazarus is at its best, it’s still one of the finest comics on the stands, a fierce, biting family draw positioned in a geopolitical battle that’s just as nasty just in wildly different ways. Michael Lark’s still got the juice, Santi Arcas still complements him perfectly, the ascendant Ariana Maher crushed it as the book’s new letterer, and Greg Rucka’s pen has lost no bit of its sting, and that means Lazarus is still operating in rarefied air as we reached the beginning of its end. We’ll see how the rest of the run goes, but consider me back onboard — I just maybe could have used a “Previously On” type note in the debut of this new volume.
