The $9.99 title cometh! This week features not just one but two $9.99 titles from DC Comics, which is a crazy price point, but hey, comic companies have to make a living, I guess. Let’s kick off The Pull – my column where I look at the week’s releases and share my buys, recommendations and curiosities – with a look at one of those two titles that I find irresistible.

I unabashedly love DC’s giant comics. I love the Walmart reprints, I love the seasonal anthologies, I love the #1000s.

I don’t love the $10 price point, but I love the format and I love sitting down to read a couple stories instead of just one. I think I would buy a “Batman” or “Superman” Giant comic monthly.

So, for instance, if the monthly issues of Batman and Detective Comics were collected together in that format monthly with say either Nightwing or Batgirl or maybe a reprint at maybe a dollar or two’s discount…I would buy that “Batman Giant-Sized” monthly more likely than I would buy both Batman and Detective separately monthly.

Or how cool would it be if you could get Bendis’ Superman and Action collected together monthly along with 12 pages of Fraction/Lieber Jimmy Olsen and 12 pages of Rucka Lois Lane for $10?

This is probably a super niche thing I want, but I would absolutely eat it up.

I… actually think I would too. I’m spending $8/month on two issues of Batman. I’d be happy to instead spend $10/month and get one issue of Batman plus one issue of Detective Comics plus whatever the rest would be. Can’t imagine it happening, but I’d dig it.

I like this idea, and it would probably be a better way to grow the audience. An 80-page giant has more “heft” and might match up better with the expectations of an audience that is used to buying a graphic novel. The concept of the 20 pages for $3.99 single issue isn’t enough “bang for your buck” for a lot of people, I would think.
