We’re operating on vibes this week, my friends, as The Pull and this look at my buys, recommendations, and curiosities from the week of comics is led by two easy sells that require very little information up front.

Comic of the Week: Batman and Robin: Year One – Dynamic Duos #1

The easy approach for celebrating this title’s arrival would be to just write the name “Chris Samnee” over and over, because that’s what hits my brain when I think of it and my fingers instinctually would like to type. But as much as I’d like to go all “Chris Samnee Chris Samnee Chris Samnee” on you, as I have done a time or two before, the larger Batman and Robin: Year One series is more than just one of the best artists to ever do it, as Mat Lopes’ colors over Samnee continue to be exquisite, Clayton Cowles is the most consistently great letterer in the game, and that Mark Waid fellow has a future in this writing game. What’s this comic about? It’s about Batman, Robin, and one of the greatest team-ups in comics history — by which I mean its creators — doing their thing. That’s all I need to know.

Trade/Graphic Novel of the Week: Chiisakobee Vol. 1 TP

In a lot of ways, manga has become the domain of my impulse-based purchases in comics, as I know too much about Western comics to have that many surprises. But the first volume of Minetaro Mochizuki and Shugoro Yamamoto’s Chiisakobee sold me purely from its cover, joining last year’s Land Vol. 1 from Kazumi Yamashita as manga releases where I just know from the look of its cover that it’s my kind of thing. This has a more Hirayasumi-like feel than Land, of course, with a slice of life energy that I just cannot resist. But given that Land and Hirayasumi are two of my favorite comics this decade, it’s pretty obvious to me that I won’t be able to resist Chiisakobee when it debuts this week. I’m all the way in on it.
