The Pull: A Look at the Comics Dropping the Week of August 19th
Gods, monsters and Daniel Warren Johnson await in The Pull, the look at my buys, recommendations, and curiosities from the week of comics. That means it’s a good week in the making. Let’s get to that and more.
Book of the Week: Wonder Woman: Dead Earth #4
I threw out an idea when Daniel Warren Johnson first joined me to talk about Wonder Woman: Dead Earth on Off Panel. It was effectively this: could this title be Wonder Woman’s answer to The Dark Knight Returns, albeit in a very, very DWJ sort of way? At the time, I wasn’t sure if I was insane or on point, but now? I’m feeling like it was the latter, because Wonder Woman: Dead Earth has been an incredible highlight reel of Johnson’s prodigious talents and everything that makes Wonder Woman such a special character.
It does that by both exposing the flaws that make her so human and the strength that makes her so much more, with Johnson finding so many different moments to emphasize her greatness. It’s been a tour de force, and hopefully a coming out party in terms of exposing the cartoonist to a slew of new fans. The only question that remains is will he stick the landing with this final issue. I suppose it depends on your perspective, as some might be hoping for triumph while others may be pulling for a darker conclusion. I don’t know what awaits within this issue, but I’ll tell you this: I bet Daniel’s come up with something special here, and however it ends will be the right way to do so. He’s earned that trust, and then some.
